Why I Choose to Homeschool

As a mom of two little ones, I’m often asked whether my kids have started school yet. When I respond with, “I’m homeschooling”, I typically get a spectrum of reactions, ranging from utter shock and disapproval to total consensus and jubilation. Who knew homeschooling was such a polarizing topic?

Naturally, people want to know why. Why homeschool? It’s a valid question. One that I had to answer for myself as well. And, if I’m being honest, it was a pretty simple one to answer.

So, here is why I choose to homeschool: homeschooling is a lifestyle.

It is an intentional choice about how each day functions. It’s a vote for flexibility, togetherness, and value-driven learning.

Flexibility.

If we have an appointment or class in the middle of the day, no problem! We can shift our curriculum to make the day work for us. Our days are versatile and … fun! On top of that, our mornings are relaxed and enjoyable. I sip, yes sip, my coffee while I have Bible time with my kids and they enjoy their morning smoothies as they eagerly listen. It’s bliss.

Togetherness.

THIS is my favorite part of homeschooling. The truth is that I am keenly aware of how precious this time is with my little ones and I will never rush it away. To stand by them and witness their growth and learning every moment of the day is a gift I will always cherish and so will they. I mean, days filled with hugs, giggles, and new adventures with the ones I love most? Sign me up any day.

Value-Driven Learning.

As a mom who homeschools, I can tailor what and how my kids learn. Because I know their learning style, I am able to provide individualized curriculum, activities, and projects that intrinsically feed their minds and align with the values I want to instill in them. I am able to combine what they need to learn and what I would like them to learn, which gives me the utmost confidence in their cognitive development during these formative years. As an instructional designer who knows the importance of tailored learning, this was one of the biggest contributors to my decision to homeschool for preschool.

Are you thinking about homeschooling for preschool?

If you are, you are like the thousands of parents out there who are thinking the same thing. From my talks with like-minded parents, I think part of this is due to the fact that it’s never been easier to provide superior learning to your children from home. There are so many programs, books, and resources for homeschoolers that it’s simply a matter of choosing one that fits your goals and budget.

The best piece of advice I would give is to take your time to consider what is important to you and your whole family as a unit. If after thinking it over, homeschooling feels right, know that you can do this! It’s not only achievable, it can be incredibly delightful!
